Near-wall lubricating layer in drag-reduced flows of rigid polymers

چکیده
We experimentally investigate the drag-reduced channel flow of an inelastic, shear-thinning rigid polymer solution. Particle image velocimetry and shear-viscosity measurements are used to obtain instantaneous distributions shear viscosity within turbulent domain. elucidate that drag reduction for polymers is primarily driven by a thin lubricating layer consists low-viscosity fluid near wall.

Drag reduction by polymers in wall bounded turbulence.
We elucidate the mechanism of drag reduction by polymers in turbulent wall-bounded flows: while momentum is produced at a fixed rate by the forcing, polymer stretching results in the suppression of momentum flux to the wall. On the basis of the equations of fluid mechanics we develop the phenomenology of the "maximum drag reduction asymptote" which is the maximum drag reduction attained by poly...

Computational experiments based on the direct numerical simulation of turbulent channel flow reveal that the skin friction can be reduced as much as 70% by the action of a localized steady force acting against the flow close to the wall. In addition, the excessive shear stresses observed during the laminar-to-turbulence transition can be substantially reduced. For a sustained reduction in the s...
متن کاملMechanical degradation of drag reducing polymers in suspensions of blood cells and rigid particles.
Natural and synthetic soluble drag reducing polymers (DRP) have been shown to produce beneficial effects on blood circulation in various animal models and may represent a novel bioengineering way to treat cardiovascular disorders. These polymers are known to degrade when subjected to high shear stresses which could be a part of the process of their elimination from the vascular system. However,...

متن کاملVIEWPOINT Polymers Reduce Drag
F rictional drag steals energy from a moving fluid, but the loss usually becomes greater as the flow goes from smooth, or “laminar,” to turbulent. The onset of turbulence therefore poses a problem for many situations involving fluid flow through a conduit, be it oil in a giant pipeline, blood in a human aorta, or liquid in a heat exchanger. One established solution is to add a small amount of p...
